Refrigerator Cleaning and Care

Refrigerators are a lot like air conditioners they take off heat to contribute cold for our food. That means that refrigerators have the same working parts that your air conditioner has and should be taken care of in the same way so they will last as long as possible. The refrigerator has an evaporator built into the back of the cabinet. It has a heat rejection expedient or condenser in the form of copper coil in the bottom of the cabinet where the compressor, fan and other electronic components are located. There are some important things you can do to help your refrigerator do the best job of taking care of your food. Permissible cleaning, Permissible storage, Permissible operation.

Proper cleaning of your refrigerator consists of more than just whipping out the vegetable drawer, although that is important. You should clean up spills and leakage on regular basis and you should unplug the refrigerator take off all the food and take off all shelving, drawers, etc. Whip down the inside of the refrigerator with a aggregate of 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 quart of warm water and whip dry. Hand wash the shelving, drawers, etc. In warm soapy water. Make sure to rinse wholly and whip dry. Do not use hot water the glass may break and the plastic will melt into an unusable shape. Also be sure and clean the door gasket to insure a good seal. While you are waiting for the inside and the detachable parts to dry it is a good time to take off all the artwork, magnets and sticky notes from the surface of the cabinet and give it a good cleaning with warm soapy water. Whip dry and begin putting the detachable stuff back inside. Now that the inside and the out side of your refrigerator are clean and dry lets focus on what makes it purr. At the bottom of the cabinet in the front you will see a grill, it will unsnap from the front, now look down and oooh ugh look at the size of those dust bunnies.

Get a vacuum with a wand attachment and stick it in there and vacuum all that dirt, dust, dead critters, all manner of hair human and animal out of there. You may want to pull the refrigerator out and vacuum it from behind as well to make sure you have in fact got all of it out. Your refrigerator will in fact thank you because now it can breathe. Do this annual unless you are a crazy cat someone then you should clean it out every 3 months.

Have you ever wondered why even though you keep turning your refrigerator climatic characteristic down it still does not seem any colder, well, when you reach into turn the dial can you in fact see the dial or is your refrigerator so crammed full that you have to feel your way in. As important as it is to keep the surface clean it is equally important to keep the food properly stored and not over stuffed. The cold air has to be able to circulate colse to the inside of the refrigerator in order to keep the food cold. If you over stuff the refrigerator it will not be able to circulate and the food will get warm.

How you control your refrigerator is also very important. Never run frost-free refrigerators with freezer compartments in unheated areas with air climatic characteristic below 60 F. Unless specially designed for such conditions. When the air climatic characteristic goes below 60 F. The compressor runs less, holding temperatures in the refrigerator compartment cold enough for fresh food but not cold enough in the freezer compartment to keep food potential there. At air temperatures below 40 F. The compressor stops running, so the freezer compartment rises to air climatic characteristic and food thaws and spoils. Also below 32 F. Water melted during the self-operating defrost cycle may freeze again and block air passages.

For seasonal homes with heat left on at very low temperatures, or long winter vacations with heat turned down in home, take off all food, unplug, clean thoroughly, dry, and leave door ajar so air can circulate. Be sure no child can get into empty refrigerator in your absence and become trapped! If you cannot use up all the food, give it away or throw it away; food that spoils in a refrigerator can generate odors that may want discarding the refrigerator!

For short vacations, leave refrigerator on but use up or discard perishable food, and if you have ice makers, turn off the mechanism and water line following your hand-operated directions.

Remember treat your refrigerator well and it will treat you well.

Cleaning, Diagnosing and Changing Refrigerator-Freezer Gaskets

Over time, refrigerator and freezer gaskets come to be warped, brittle, dried out, cracked and fail to keep things cold, while expanding power costs. Replacing refrigerator and freezer gaskets will save you money on your power bills, keep your food colder and increase the lifespan of your appliance.

1. Clean your old gaskets: If your old refrigerator and freezer gaskets are not too cracked or worn, try cleaning them first with vinegar.

2. The gasket test: Stick a piece of paper in the door of your refrigerator and freezer. If you can authentically pull it out, it is time for new gaskets.

3. Order new gaskets: search online for a reputable appliance parts dealer and order new gaskets. If you are unsure about the exact one you need, call the parts dealer, make sure you have your model number handy.

4. Prep new gasket and remove your old gasket: When you get your new gasket it will come in the box all twisted and bent up, so to make it install flush and easier to install, do one of 2 things, whether soak it it warm water or throw it in the dryer for 10 minutes. While your new gasket is loosening up, start your prep work. First, roll back the gasket to expose the retainer bar, loosen each screw about 2 turns each... Do not unscrew thoroughly or you will have problems. Once you have all the screws loosened, pull outward until the gasket comes out from under the retainer bars.

5. install your new gasket: Now that your old, worn out gasket is removed, take your freshly bathed or heated gasket and hold it in place working from one point, push the rounded bead in behind the raised lip of the brackets. As you work colse to the door snug down every 2nd or 3rd screw to keep the gasket in place. Sometimes it helps if you have a flatblade screw driver to push the bead in place, especially colse to the corners. Once your gasket is thoroughly in place, swing the door to the ended position... If it appears to be warped, it probably is because the screws or only snug, so twist it colse to until it looks even. Open it and tighten each screw, keep checking to make sure it is even every incorporate screws or so. If the magnetic seal is not contacting the frame in a place or two, get a hair drier and heat the gasket on high until it expands to the frame. Once the gasket is thoroughly installed, use duct tape to hold the door shut tight for a day or so and it will seat itself.
